A plain-English guide to reading an Indian bank statement — so your "expenses" number reflects what you actually spent, not money you simply moved around.
A statement lists every credit and debit in one column, in the order they happened. It doesn't know that your salary, a refund, a transfer to your savings account and a coffee are completely different things. UPI makes it worse: a line like UPI/UPI/9876543210/Payment carries almost no meaning. To understand your spending, you first have to sort transactions into types.
Three different things often get lumped together:
Getting this split right is the single biggest factor in an honest spending report.
When you pay your credit card bill, that payment is settling spending you already did on the card — it isn't new spending. If you count both the card purchases and the bill payment, you double-count. A good analysis keeps the bill payment out of your expense total (and, ideally, looks at the card statement separately for the underlying purchases).
A refund for a cancelled order, or cashback from a payment app, comes into your account as a credit — but it isn't income. Treating refunds as salary inflates your income and hides the fact that the original purchase was reversed. Refunds should be recognised as refunds and netted against spending, not added to earnings.
Recurring charges — streaming, music, a gym, cloud storage, that tool you forgot you signed up for — are easy to miss because each one is small. Grouping recurring payments together often reveals a few thousand rupees a month you'd stopped noticing.
SIPs and mutual-fund purchases leave your account, but they're not consumption — they're savings moved into an asset. Keeping investments separate from expenses gives you a clearer picture of both your spending and your savings rate.
spndrai does this sorting for you. It reads your statement, then uses deterministic rules plus AI-assisted categorisation to separate income, transfers, credit card payments, refunds and investments from real expenses — and groups the rest into categories and merchants. It isn't perfect: low-confidence transactions go to a review queue where you review and correct categories in one click, and those corrections are remembered. spndrai is a tool to understand your spending — it is not financial advice.
The sample report shows exactly how these separations look — built from dummy data.
